WORKS
The project involved replacing the existing superstructure, which consisted of longitudinal wrought iron beams supporting transverse masonry jack arches, with a precast prestressed concrete (PPC) beam deck, while retaining the existing masonry abutments and stone bearing plinths. Simultaneously, repairs were made to the existing masonry substructure and adjacent retaining walls.
Successful delivery of this project required close coordination with multiple stakeholders, including the Client, Designer, Canal and River Trust, local businesses, utilities, and specialist subcontractors. Regular progress meetings, clear communication, and diligent record-keeping were essential. Challenges arose when a gas main was incorrectly plotted in the initial design and 7 uncharted services were discovered in the bridge deck, necessitating amendments to both permanent and temporary works designs during construction. By working closely with all parties, discussing construction feasibility, and adopting a proactive problem-solving approach, we ensured that the project was completed on schedule.
